Manhole covers
- to wear

I once toured the sewers of Paris. I don’t think many people can say that. The French are very proud of their sewers, which they call les égouts, probably because it doesn’t sound nearly as bad as it does in English. Of course, French sewers are still as foul smelling, but they probably call that perfume.

This is all leading up to the fact that the folks in Vail, Colo. are plenty proud of their sewers, too. They don’t lead tours, yet, but they do sell Vail manhole cover jewelry (www.ownapieceofvail.com).

People are clamoring for miniature replicas of the resort town’s iconic manhole cover that have been fashioned into $80 sterling silver earrings, necklaces, French cufflinks and $120 Tiffany-style bracelets. So far they’ve raised $80,000 and proceeds benefit Vail’s Art in Public Places program.

Now if only Allentown could cash in on its manhole covers …
